WE DO NOT OBJECT TO SUICIDE OR ASSISTED SUICIDE BUT… we object to doctors and nurses harming and killing people – people who are not suffering from irremediable or unbearable conditions, and people who do not want to be put to death.
If a person wishes to take his or her own life, or to ask someone else to kill them, that is their right. We strongly believe that every person of sound mind has the right to make decisions for themselves, and that no one, least of all government or health care workers, should overrule a person on any personal health care or life decision.
But that’s not happening now, and it won’t happen if Bill C-14 is passed into law. Elderly people now are frequently drugged without consent, abused, unlawfully imprisoned, physically and psychologically harmed, and put to death by doctors, nurses and other health care providers.
We object to Bill C-14 because it would give doctors and nurses immunity from criminal prosecution in every death that they claim is an assisted suicide. This would encourage health care providers to act with even greater impunity because they will not face any repercussions, as long as they claim a death is “assisted suicide”.
There are no “safeguards” in place now that actually protect people from being drugged, assaulted and killed by doctors and nurses in hospitals and nursing homes.
What The Coalition of Elder Rights Defenders is asking for is that no one be given immunity from prosecution for killing another person UNTIL a system of effective safeguards is implemented and proven to protect people from malicious harm and homicide at the hands of doctors and nurses. Otherwise people who don’t want to die will be at great(er) risk than they are now of being maliciously harmed and killed in hospitals and nursing homes.
